First, What is a Serious Game and Why Should I Play It?

In other words, what’s in it for me?  Hopefully, quite a bit of new knowledge.

Games have been used for many years as teaching tools.  In fact, the game your about to play was first released as cross-cultural negotiation paper-based game in 1996.  Its roots are even earlier.

The term “serious game” refers to games that are played primarily as learning tools as opposed to pure entertainment.  Serious games are used by many industrial sectors including defense, medicine and emergency management.

We have found that individuals, teams and organizations in Critical Infrastructure sectors can benefit greatly using scenario driven games.

With the advent of computing technologies, games, simulations, and other scenario driven environments can be played online.

This game works and you may be surprised at the level of realism you will find.

Why Cross Culture?

Typically, cross-culture refers to differences between regions/countries and/or ethnicities.  While this is a true statement, more recently it is understood that organizational cultures are different.

For example, there are cultural differences between supply chain organizations and their customers.  End users can have different culture as well, particularly as the result of mergers and acquisitions.

Cultural differences are more pervasive than many belief and can a have a major negative impact on collaborative processes if not understood and accommodated.

Rules of the Game

The rules are very simple.  You and your colleague need to collaborate to solve the problem provided each of you in the Position Paper.  However, since each organization’s culture is different both players have some challenges to overcome to reach agreement.

  1. First you will each be directed to complete a short series of questions designed to develop your profile. This will provide some information and you that will NOT (except Player Demographics) be shared directly with the other player, other than a synopsis.

This will include:

  • Player Demographics (Completed on Profile Page)
  • Player Traits (Temperament and Personality)
  • Player Key Performance Indicators
  • Your firm’s Organizational  and Team Traits

The good news is that no matter how many times you play the game you only have to provide this data once.  Additionally, we use sliders to help speed you through the process.  In the following example, each player will “slide” from ‘Most Not Like Me’ to ‘Most Like Me’ on a scale of zero to nine.

Please do not over think the questions and provide your answer based on your first thought.  Experience shows that this approach generates the best data.

  1. Next you will interact directly with you counterpart using video conferencing and collaborate to solve the problem posed.
  1. Then each of you will be asked to complete a brief Post Game Survey in a similar manner to the above. This will provide data regarding how you ‘felt’ about the collaborative experience.
  1. Finally, the system will send you both to a Dashboard where an Analysis of the collaborative process is provided. Lessons learned will be made available as well as a comparative analysis from other players

Experience has shown that the results will be insightful and applicable in your dealings with others in ‘your’ real world.
